To be six...

"Rise and shine, time to start your living time".

Those are the words I utter to her on every school morning. Her alarm clock is playing loud pop music and blankets are over her head. It isn't until I say those words to her that she actually gets out of bed each morning.

This morning, the words we adopted from a book that I have been saying to her for years could not escape my lips. I simply said rise and shine beautiful girl. As she yanked the blankets off her head and smiled at me and said "good morning mama", I smiled back at her.

Every year of her life has been a wonderful experience. But... To be six! To be six, is awesome.

She likes being six because she can wear Halloween costumes to the park at Christmas time. She likes being six because she can still cuddle up on her mom or dads lap. To be six is to have the most vivid imagination, where action figures can save the world or curl up next to you at night. To be six is to finally be able to read the words you've been looking at for the past five years of your life and understand them. To be six is feeling an accomplishment when you tie your shoes by yourself. When you are six stickers rock your world. To be six, a giant cardboard box is a spaceship, or a car, or just plain "not a box". To be six is to be fearless and innocent and trusting.

To be six...

The grief that I feel, I know that all parents, sisters, brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends feel it. I think of the beautiful souls lost. I think of the grief and innocence lost of those who had to witness the violence. I think of the man who did this. I think of that he was six once too.

To be six is wonderful. May all the beautiful souls in the world who have lost their lives too early, rest in peace.
